This tattoo of a red heart with a black D inside on the outside of her right wrist signifies Avril’s love for her (now ex) husband  Deryck Whibley of Sum 41. He also has a similar tattoo, but with an ‘A’ instead of the ‘D’.

Avril Lavigne tattoos – 25^th birthday

In April 2008, when she was 25 years old, Avril and her friend, Allie, both took a trip to the tattoo studio. Avril had a blue star with a black outline tattooed on this inside of her right elbow, which she later had filled-in with black ink.

Also on the inside of her right elbow, Avril Lavigne tattoos feature the Roman numbers ‘XXV’, which in normal figures is 25. Avril had the XXV tattoo done along with her ‘then’ boyfriend, Brody Jenner, who got a matching tattoo inside his elbow at the same time.

Avril Lavigne tattoos of stars began with a modest star on the inside of her left wrist – and guitarist, Ben Moody, of Evanescence got a matching tattoo at the same time. They chose the style from the artwork on Avril Lavigne’s Let Go album and they got the tat to commemorate writing the great song, Nobody’s Home, together!

Avril Lavigne tattoos with Deryck Whibley

In March 2010, Avril helped husband, Deryck Whibley, celebrate his 30^th birthday, and although they had already started divorce proceedings, they were and have remained good friends. They both got a matching ‘30’ tattoo – Avril’s is on her right wrist.

Even though they are now divorced, Avril has left the tattoo as it was – as a symbol of the good times they shared. And sometime later, she added a cute musical note tattoo just below on her wrist.

On the side of her left wrist, Avril also has Deryck’s first initial “D” in a cute, pink love-heart outline, (Deryck also has an ‘A’ in a love-heart for Avril).

Avril added a lightning-bolt tattoo right below the ‘30’ in April 2010 with Brody Jenner, her boyfriend at the time, who got a matching tattoo behind his ear.

Avril also has ‘Brody’ inked on the right-side of her rib-cage, and Brody has ‘Avril’ on his elbow from a joint tattoo session in July 2010.

In May 2010, Avril and Brody got matching ‘FUCK’ tattoos on their ribcage and Avril always says this is her favourite tattoo – and her favourite word! LOL!

In March, 2011 the wittiest of Avril Lavigne tattoos appeared, on the left-side of her neck.   At the time, she tweeted this humorous comment:

         It comes in handy all the time. It can hurt you, but at the same time keep you       together, safety first!

It’s a reference to the punk fad of the ‘70’s for pinning safety-pins through the ears like ear-rings and as this is only a drawing of a safety-pin, puncturing her skin, it’s a jokey ‘watered-down’ punk symbol!

Free advertising – Avril’s ‘Abbey Dawn’ tattoo

The name ‘Abbey Dawn’ appears on her left forearm, a reminder of the nick-name given by her father when she was a little girl. Abbey Dawn is also the brand name of the Avril Lavigne clothing line, and there’s nothing like a bit of free advertising to boost sales!

Underneath the Gothic script of her alter-ego, Avril added a brilliantly executed and sinister skull and crossed bones in May 2012.

Here is Avril Lavigne’s latest new tattoo. The largest of Avril Lavigne tattoos, up to now, are the two French phrases written in flowing cursive script on her left forearm:

‘La vie en Rose’ means you are so happy, that life seems wonderful, because you’re     seeing everything through the ‘rose-tinted spectacles’ of love!

It’s part of a famous French love song, La Vie en Rose, sung by Edith Piaf. Here’s the English translation to give you some idea of what the quote really means:

‘When he takes me in his arms
He speaks to me in a low voice,
I see life as if it were rose-tinted.’

And ‘Vivre le moment présent’ means ‘Live for the moment!’

She got this tattoo with husband, Chad Kroeger, before they started dating, when they were collaborating on song-writing for an Avril Lavigne album. According to Avril:

When I met him I was really surprised that he didn’t have any tattoos, so the second   day in the studio I’m like, ‘I’m so getting you your first tattoo!’

They didn’t get matching tats that day – Avril just got, ‘La vie en Rose’ and Chad got, ‘Vivre le moment présent’. However, when things started heating up between the lovers, Avril added the second line to be matchy-matchy with Chad!

Will there be more Avril Lavigne tattoos?

Yes! Avril made her plans for future tattoos very clear in this interview with Inked Magazine:

         I want to get a big-ass-motherfucking tattoo on my forearm. I’m going to wait a few    years and make sure I still want it then.

         I have to wait for that special someone to come back into my life. I want to do a      big- ass heart with a flag through it with a name. I want it to be a huge experience and        statement.

So, she’s planning a big, soppy, traditional heart with a name banner attached. I’m not surprised because Avril’s obviously a very warm and loving person!
